Fulcrum Racing Wheels - A Selection Guide
We’ve put the Fulcrum wheels in order of price and have detailed some of the technology used in the different models. Generally as you might expect, the more you pay, the higher the specification and the more advanced the performance. This guide also explains how the wheelsets are named.
When buying, remember that you can get significant discounts on individual wheels as the shops often have deals running on particular models. Its not uncommon to see up to 30% off and that is a big saving when you might be spending the best part of £1000 !
Wheel Technology
Just to clear this up to start with, as the Fulcrum wheel model number gets lower, the specification rises until you reach the top two models, which are actually given names; the the Racing Light and the Racing Speed.
As you go up the range you can expect to see more aerodynamic wheels with reduced weight and increased rigidity, to provide more efficient transfer of your energy into speed.
Fulcrum use various technical terms to describe each addition of technology to their wheels; here is a brief summary.
The numbers 2:1 refer to the use of double spokes in critical stress areas. Max. compatibility is a reference to the wheel wheel being able to work with other manufacturers products. Dynamic balancing means using extra weights to improve balance in the same way that they are used on car wheels, except that on bikes the weight is integrated. MoMag is a Fulcrum spoke tensioning technology. Ultra Fit refers to the design of the tyre/rim interface in order to make tubeless use work. 2-way fit means the wheel takes tubeless tyres and finally CULT refers to the use of special bearings using ceramic balls.
The Fulcrum Wheels
At the entry level we have the Fulcrum Racing 7 at a wheelset weight of 1858g. Then there is the Racing 5 at 1755g which uses a modest amount of extra technology to lighten it.
There is then a more significant jump in specification as you go up to the Fulcrum Racing 3 at 1605g. To get the weight reduction requires the inclusion of special machining techniques with no rim drilling. This wheel also includes adjustable bearings and aero spokes, which have been reduced in number compared to the lower models.
The Fulcrum Racing 1 is the next model and is a serious road racing wheel, being slightly lighter but with triple milled rims, special aero spokes and a combination of Fulcrum wheel technology, including 2-way and Ultra Fit for tubeless tyre use.
At the top of the models with numbers is the Fulcrum Racing Zero with a significant weight drop to 1425g for a wheelset, by the use of extruded rims and variable section aero spoke design.
Top Fulcrum Racing wheels
As mentioned earlier these are the Fulcrum Racing Light and the Racing Speed both of which use CULT technology (ceramics and changes to hub metal) to reduce wheel bearing friction and increase longevity.
These combine with the top technological advances in cycle wheel research, including changes in spoke placement to give rapid response to drive. The Fulcrum Racing Light weighs in at just 1280g and the Racing Speed uses a 50mm aero rim profile.
If you are seriously competing in sprint or uphill races where you need maximum acceleration and response, these are the wheels for you.
