medical scientist or lab tech?
im a 2nd yr student doing biomedical course in dublin.
its 5 yr long course and involves a lot of hard works and all.
but these days i hear people saying it's over for all medical scientists and they r jst tech and all sort of things.
is there no vision after this course?
would it be better to change the course or stick to it?
I was faced with the same dilemma when I was in school, either becoming a research scientist of a lab tech. Let me say up front, neither course will make you a boatload of money. However, if I had to do it all over again I would stay in school as long as I could.
I gave the same advice to my niece who wanted to drop out and become a hair dresser. She decided to stay in school and eventually earned a Masters. She now does something she loves and has no regrets.
If you drop out now you will never know what could have been had you stayed in school. Its a decision you will live with for the next 40-50 years of your working life. Stay in school as long as you can, maintain good grades and have fun. You never know what opportunities might arise and if they don't you could always drop out and become a tech at any time.
Good luck to you.

Vision Impairment and Low Vision Options
Vision Impairment and Low Vision Options
When your vision is impaired or you are considered to have moderate low vision to profound low vision their can be light at the end of the tunnel for some. Visual acuity is not always a way of being able to determine how severe the problem may be. Different lifestyles can make the necessity of some sort of care plan for someone who is in need of low vision care. It is best to see an eye doctor first to help you determine which type of care is best for you.
An exam can consist of several tests including testing your visual acuity's, refraction, a visual field test, and even eye charts. An eye doctor is then better capable of prescribing the right device or devices and in some cases low vision rehabilitation. The cost for these services may vary and you should contact your doctor’s office to get a better understanding of what is involved. Medicare may have some coverage towards low vision rehabilitation services. You may want to check if it is available to you in your area.
The most common devices to help with low vision consist of:
- Microscope or Spectacle magnifiers that contain a magnified lens that is mounted.
- Stand Magnifiers equipped with lights, and hand held as well.
- Hand held devices or bi-optic telescopes.
- (CCTV) Closed Circuit Television, portable or can be used with computer.
Many of these high tech items can be quite costly so it is important again to see your eye doctor to better understand what is best for your vision needs. Just remember that there is hope and before giving up o being able to do things you enjoy talk with your doctor first or seek a second opinion. The technology and education we have today may help you see better tomorrow so see you eye doctor to be fit correctly by your eye care professional.
