Is it possible to "skip" the cycle?
I just setup a 55 gallon tank with a new EHEIM filter. I mixed eheims substrat pro (the ceramic balls that house the bacteria) with biomax balls (same thing but from Fluval) from my other 55 that has been running for months. With some beneficial bacteria already inside the filter, will my tank still go through a cycle?
I already added 8 silver-tipped tetras to the tank, assuming they would produce enough ammonia to keep the bacteria I added alive and to populate the rest.
What you have done is called cloning, taking a large percentage of cycled media and adding it, and an equal percentage of the bio load, to another tank.
A mature colony of nitrifying bacteria can double in 24 hours, given the media to colonize on. There is a difference between cycled & mature, mature colonies are those that have been growing strong for a few months, well past the newly cycled more fragle stage.
Let's say, for ease of math, that you have a 10 gallon tank, with 10 small fish, that has been running for several months. The nitrifying bacteria in your filter media are capable of supporting the bio load of those 10 fish. The filter doesn't know if it is running on a 10 gallon tank, or a 100 gallon tank, nor does the nitrifying bacteria.
So, using out easy math, 1/2 of the media will support 5 fish, 1/10 will support 1 fish. If you wanted to start a 10 gallon tank with half the fish, take 5 fish, half the media, and add the fish to the new tank, the mature media to the new filter. Bam, instant cycled tank. Replace the missing media with new, knowing that the bacteria double in 24 hours, and enjoy your fish.
This is not exact science, and doesn't need to be. If you have a group of differing sizes of fish, or even if you want to start a tank with some new fish, guesstimate the media amount, and switch it over. Remember, this works with a mature filter, newly cycled media can be iffy. It also helps the nitrifying bacteria to play catch up if you fast the fish for 24 hours before switching media, and feed lightly for the next week. Less food means less waste produces, giving you a lower bio load.
I've been doing this for years, running spare filters when I shut down tanks, and pulling filters when I set them up. I have five 40 gallon tanks sitting empty atm, rack is built, 5 sponge filters running in other tanks, all waiting for me to pull wire on another curciut & run air to the rack. In a couple of weeks they will have fish, with cycled fiters.
