changing derailers on my road bike?
On my old Raleigh it has Simplex derailers. I got a Shimano Ultegra (new) for free and want to know if it will work on a bike with 5 sprockets in the rear.
Of course. Just use a 7 speed chain, such as Shimano HG50 or HG70. These are very inexpensive and work great. This is the narrowest recommended fit for the 5 speed freewheel and the widest recommended fit for the Ultegra SS and GS 9.
So, it will fit both together, and it will work very well.
It is surprising that your bike has a modern derailleur hanger. Don't you need the little $7 adapter tab before the Ultegra will fit? Maybe not, but that's a cool old bike if it comes with the derailleur hanger built in. Most old bikes don't have that.
That Ultegra, if it is the GS or "road triple" version has capacity to 28 teeth, or to 30 teeth if the "b" screw is put in backwards so that the head touches the hanger. Some people even get them to fit up to 32, but I have not. The Ultegra SS, or "road double" version is more limited, but should fit 28 teeth max cog flawlessly, and may fit up to 30, depending on the derailleur hanger angle.
Indexing is not necessary. Your current shifters will operate the Ultegra just fine. Should you desire indexing, anything Shimano, from Tourney through Dura Ace will shift it as long as the indicator (or ad) has the same number of selections as you have cogs. Once again, indexing is a comfort feature (or was when first introduced) and it is not needed.
With only 5 gears to work instead of 9, the Ultegra will think it is in heaven.
