Mavic Wheel Selection Guide
If you're considering an upgrade to your road or mountain bike wheels then Mavic is one of the main contenders when it comes to performance. However, for many cyclists the choice can be quite confusing unless you know someone knowledgeable. This is because the Mavic wheel range does not have an easily recognisable set of model number or codes to figure out each wheel's specification.
We've designed this guide to give you some basic information on the wheels currently available; this will give you some useful knowledge if you are planning to buy or phone a cycle shop retailer. You'll also find guides and current prices on other popular wheel makes on our site: wheelhub.co.uk
Mavic have a mixture of wheel models where each new one has a slightly different name, although you can't tell straight away which came first. First of all, for the road wheels, starting at the entry level, they manufacture the Aksium which comes in one specification. Next comes the Ksyrium, which is available in the Equipe, the Elite, the SL, the SL Premium and the R-Sys, which is the top, latest performance wheel.
There is also an aero category of wheels with the Cosmic and Cosmic Carbone, which are specifically designed for low inertia, to you and me that means rapid acceleration and speed as a result of high tech. aerodynamic design.
In the mountain bike category, Mavic make several wheels for different purposes including cross country, enduro, freeride and downhill. Because mtb cycling results in more shock to the wheels, they are generally made with a compromise between weight and strength.
The Crossmax wheel is for straightforward cross county use, with the versions moving through SL to the current SLR model, each one adding some more advanced technology and research. The SLR is a World cup winner.
Next there is the Crossride for general off road use at entry price level.
At the next level up Mavic make the Crosstrail, which includes aero spokes and a special rim, while also being tough enough for the job. This wheel can also be used with tubeless tyres.
When you get onto the downhill and freeride wheels, they have to be ultra tough and strong to withstand extreme and sudden shocks. For this Mavic have the Deemax for mixed use and the Deetraks for ultimate freeride, with wide rim and great strength.
