The road bicycle - or they can be called the street bicycle as well as the road bicycle. Bicycles were introduced to the public around the early nineteenth century and now there are more than a billion bicycles on the road today; this means all over the world not just in the United States. Today there are more road bicycles on the road than there are cars. The usage of the road bicycle is vast. Policemen use them so does the military, people who want to ride the bikes for exercise, children on three wheelers, etc. some courier companies use them as they can get to a place faster than a vehicle, especially in the big cities.

Most children learn to ride the road bicycle, usually with four wheels. The two large ones and then the ‘training wheels’ that are attached on the back of the bicycle. This gives the bike balance so the children can feel a bit safer when riding and learning to balance the bike. Once they have learned to balance the bike the training wheels are taken off and a way they go down the street, free as the breeze.

The speed on the road bicycle is usually around ten to fifteen miles per hour. That seems slow compared to a car but it is not. It feels like you are going forty mph. for those of us that just ride a bicycle for enjoyment that is fast enough to go down the street and maybe pop a wheelie or two. Thankfully the road bicycle today has reduced a lot of congestion in the big cities along with the gas fumes that are toxic. When the bicycles were becoming known they actually reduced the use of horses, which were quite smelly and sometimes the horse just didn’t want to move. With the bicycle it always moved and it went where one would steer it.

In many European countries such as Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands there are more road bicycles than there are cars and trucks. These can be used to carry many different items such as groceries, papers, etc. In England companies get a tax break if they have bicycles instead of cars. There are bicycle racks everywhere and usually for a small fee one can use them all day and not worry about their bikes getting stolen.

Even in the Pacific Northwest where the road bicycles are quite popular there are rules, these are basically the same as the cars. There are lanes that are mapped out just for bicycles and cars are not allowed. There are many people who do not own a car and use their bicycles to go to work and back along with recreation. Many will use bicycles just for the pure enjoyment of sightseeing, cycling around the city or up a hiking trail.

The road bicycle can range from one hundred dollars up to three or four hundred dollars. But if you want one just to scoot around and enjoy it, there is a price range just for you. Be sure to get the right gear to go along with it and you will have many hours of enjoyment.
